How Often is Pest Control Needed?

20 Oct 2022

Once every three months of pest control is often recommended. But for homes and buildings with severe infestation, the overall pest treatment and monitoring could be more frequent until the threat is eliminated or better managed.

Why only professionals should do pest control

First, DIY pest extermination might only be a temporary solution. The pests might still come back even after just a few days because the root causes were not dealt with.

Second, DIY pest extermination often involves the use of harmful pesticides. Human exposure to pesticides, whether through inhalation, ingestion, skin contact or direct contact with the eyes,  can result in the following:

  • Headache, dizziness and nausea
  • Blurry vision
  • Excessive eye watering
  • Excess saliva
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrheoa, stomach cramps
  • Unusual sweating

Those are just some of the acute symptoms resulting from a one-time exposure to pesticides. Chronic exposure and poisoning, on the other hand, may result in the following:

  • Generally feeling unwell
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Fatigue and muscle weakness

The symptoms and effects often are much worse for babies, young children, pregnant women and elderly people.

As a result, it’s essential that only pest professionals do the work to protect yourself from harm. Professionals use safe and appropriate methods in pest extermination and they also know how to properly store and dispose of the chemicals and other waste.

Pest prevention first

Using pesticides is an extreme way to get rid of pests. As much as possible though, alternative ways are applied to “naturally” eliminate pests or at least make them stay away from your home or building. To accomplish this, some ways are:

  • Removing the clutter and clearing up sites where pests are possibly thriving
  • Fixing plumbing leaks so water doesn’t accumulate (rodents, cockroaches and other pests also need water to survive)
  • Ensuring trash bins are tightly covered (pests will have fewer food sources)
  • Closing off places where pests can hide and enter (close off cracks, gaps and crevices)

But if the damage is already severe, especially when it’s about termite damage, it’s good to call a pest professional right away. This is for you to immediately know the extent of the damage and prevent termites from causing more expensive structural repairs.
